Delhi to Agra: Distance, Drive Time and the Best Way to Travel

Delhi to Agra is the most travelled leg of the Golden Triangle, and the question we hear most from guests planning it is simple: how far is it, and what is the best way to get there? Here is the honest answer from guides who make the trip every week.

The distance

Agra sits about 230 km (145 miles) south-east of Delhi in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The straight-line distance is shorter, but the number that matters is the road distance from your Delhi hotel to the Taj Mahal, which is usually 220–240 km depending on where in Delhi you start.

Option 1: Private car on the Yamuna Expressway

The Yamuna Expressway is a six-lane, access-controlled toll road that runs from Greater Noida almost to Agra. Once you are on it the drive is smooth and fast; the slow parts are getting out of Delhi and the final stretch into Agra.

• Time: 3.5–4 hours door to door in normal conditions
• Best departure: before 07:00 to beat Delhi traffic, or around 02:30 if you want to be at the Taj Mahal gate for sunrise
• Stops: clean rest areas with cafés roughly every 40–50 km
• Winter note: dense fog in December and January can slow the expressway considerably in the early hours

A private car is the option most of our guests choose because it gives you the flexibility to stop at Sikandra (Akbar's tomb) on the way in, add Fatehpur Sikri, or leave Agra whenever you are ready rather than at a fixed train time.

Option 2: Train

Several daily trains connect Delhi and Agra. The one to know is the Gatimaan Express (12050), India's fastest scheduled train on this route:

• Departs Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM) at 08:10
• Arrives Agra Cantt at 09:50 — about 1 hour 40 minutes
• Returns from Agra Cantt in the evening

Shatabdi and Vande Bharat services also run the route and take roughly two hours. Trains are comfortable and punctual, but note three practical points: Hazrat Nizamuddin is not central Delhi (allow 45–60 minutes to reach it in the morning), the earliest arrival is mid-morning so a sunrise visit is impossible by train, and you will still need a car and driver in Agra to move between the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Itimad-ud-Daulah.

Many of our guests combine the two: train down in the morning, our driver and guide waiting at Agra Cantt, then a private car onward to Jaipur or back to Delhi in the evening.

Option 3: Flying

Agra's airport has very limited commercial service and no useful Delhi connection, so flying is not a realistic option for this leg. By the time you have reached Delhi airport and cleared security, the car is already halfway there.

Which should you choose?

• Only have one day? A same-day Agra tour by car (leave Delhi 06:00, back by 21:00) is the classic choice.
• Prefer to skip the drive? Take the Gatimaan Express and let us meet you at the station with a car and guide.
• Continuing to Jaipur? Go by car — Agra to Jaipur is another 240 km (4–5 hours) via Fatehpur Sikri, and there is no fast direct train.

Remember that the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, so plan your Agra day around it whichever way you travel.
