The geography that decides it
Delhi, Agra and Jaipur form a rough triangle with sides of 230–270 km:
- Delhi to Agra: ~230 km, 3.5–4 hours by car
- Agra to Jaipur: ~240 km, 4–5 hours by car, via Fatehpur Sikri
- Jaipur to Delhi: ~270 km, 5–5.5 hours by car
Every change of city is therefore half a day on the road. That is the constraint that shapes every itinerary below.
1 day: Agra only
You cannot do the full triangle in a day, but a same-day Agra tour from Delhi is one of the most popular trips we run: depart Delhi around 06:00, Taj Mahal and Agra Fort with a guide, lunch, Itimad-ud-Daulah or Mehtab Bagh, and back in Delhi by about 21:00. Long, but very doable.
3 days: possible, but rushed
Delhi sightseeing on day one, drive to Agra and see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort on day two, then drive to Jaipur for Amber Fort on day three and fly out of Jaipur. It works only if you fly out of Jaipur rather than returning to Delhi, and Delhi gets a single afternoon. We only recommend it when dates are fixed.
4 days: the classic minimum
This is the itinerary most first-time visitors take:
- 1Delhi — Old and New Delhi: Jama Masjid, Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar, India Gate
- 2Delhi to Agra — morning drive, Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh for the sunset view of the Taj
- 3Agra to Jaipur — Taj Mahal at sunrise, then drive to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri
- 4Jaipur — Amber Fort, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, then depart from Jaipur airport or drive back to Delhi
Four days gives you the sunrise Taj visit, which is the single thing guests remember most, without any city feeling like a drive-through.
5 to 6 days: comfortable
Add a second Delhi day (the city genuinely needs it), a free evening in Agra, or a Jaipur day for the bazaars and a cooking class. The pace drops from "efficient" to "relaxed" and you stop living by the clock.
7 days and beyond: extensions
With a week you can bolt on a fourth destination without touching the core circuit:
- Ranthambore — tiger safaris, 3.5 hours from Jaipur
- Udaipur — the lake city, a short flight or a long drive from Jaipur
- Varanasi — the Ganges ghats, by flight from Delhi or Jaipur
