Getting Around Agra: Uber, Autos, Golf Carts and the Taj No-Vehicle Zone

Agra is a compact city for sightseeing: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Itimad-ud-Daulah sit within a few kilometres of each other on the Yamuna. Getting between them is easy once you understand the one rule that governs everything near the Taj.

The Taj Mahal no-vehicle zone

To protect the marble from pollution, no petrol or diesel vehicles are permitted within roughly 500 metres of the Taj Mahal. Every car, taxi and auto stops at a designated parking area — Shilpgram for the East gate, the West gate parking, or the South gate approach — and the last stretch is covered by:

• Electric golf carts — shared shuttles from the parking areas to the gates for a small fee
• Battery rickshaws (e-rickshaws) — cheap and plentiful
• Walking — 10–15 minutes from the East gate parking, pleasant early in the morning

This applies to everyone, including guests in private cars, so build ten minutes into every Taj arrival.

Uber and Ola

Both ride-hailing apps operate in Agra and are the easiest way for independent travelers to move around: the fare is fixed in the app, no negotiation, and you can be picked up at your hotel. Two caveats: cars can be scarce very early in the morning (sunrise runs) and late at night, and drivers cannot enter the no-vehicle zone, so you will be dropped at the nearest parking area rather than at the gate.

Auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws

Autos are everywhere and fine for short hops such as Agra Fort to the Baby Taj. Agree the fare before you get in, or ask your hotel what the trip should cost. Cycle rickshaws are slower and best kept to the lanes around the Taj gates and Taj Ganj.

Agra Cantt to the Taj Mahal

Most trains from Delhi, including the Gatimaan Express, arrive at Agra Cantt, about 6–7 km from the Taj. A taxi or Uber takes 20–30 minutes; the prepaid taxi counter at the station is a reliable option if your phone data is not yet working. The metro

Agra opened the first short stretch of its metro in 2024, linking the Taj East Gate area with a handful of stations towards the city centre. It is clean and cheap but does not yet reach the railway station or the airport, so for most visitors it is a curiosity rather than a plan.

Distances between the sights

• Taj Mahal to Agra Fort: ~3 km, 10–15 minutes
• Agra Fort to Itimad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj): ~4 km across the river, 15 minutes
• Taj Mahal to Mehtab Bagh (the sunset viewpoint): ~10 km by road around the river, 25–30 minutes
• Agra to Fatehpur Sikri: ~40 km, about an hour each way
• Agra to Sikandra (Akbar's tomb): ~13 km, 30 minutes

What we recommend

For a single day in Agra with three or four sights, a private car with driver is still the most efficient option: no waiting for rides, luggage stays in the boot, and the driver knows exactly which parking area suits which gate. Independent travelers spending a night in Taj Ganj can happily manage with Uber and autos. Either way, arrive at the Taj early — the sunrise guide explains why — and remember it is closed on Fridays.
